Geocaching is a sport where players use GPS units to find hidden treasure containers called "caches" or "geocaches". There are literally thousands of caches across the nation to find. Visit Geocaching.com for more information. To participate in the council's Geocache event, you will need an account with Geocaching.com. It is free!

In each of the 12 Districts of the Chief Seattle Council, a cache has been hidden. (*editor's note* A few caches are still under review, but that does not mean you can't get started today!) These caches are near a completed Eagle Scout service project and are fun way to showcase some of Scouting's greatest gifts to America. Getting to see the pinnacle of Scouting achievement in a fun way is highly meaningful for young Scouts.

In each Cache to Eagle cache is a point of the Scout Law. After finding all twelve caches, email the cache numbers and points of the Scout Law (e.g. Cache #1—Friendly, Cache #2—Reverent, etc.) to rlarson@seattlebsa.org and you will receive this Cache to Eagle patch.

Don't forget to send us your mailing address!

There are five Treasures of Scouting caches to find. (*editor's note* A few caches are still under review, but that does not mean you can't get started today!) Each cache has information highlighting a Scouting program and a batch of cards. To be entered in drawing for a special 100th Anniversary Geocoins, take one card, fill it out and mail to the Chief Seattle Council. Drawings will occur monthly. If you don't win one month, your card will be left in the raffle box and you will have another chance the next month.

Please take only one card from the cache, multiple entries from the same cache are not permitted.

Pillars of Scouting Travel Bugs

In addition to hiding caches, the Chief Seattle Council has also released these Travel Bugs to travel the United States through the Geocaching community:

TB36Z2F Pillars of Scouting Tag - Achievement!
TB36ZT2 Pillars of Scouting Tag - Character!
TB37001 Pillars of Scouting Tag - Leadership!
TB370DW Pillars of Scouting Tag - Outdoors!
TB36ZHW Pillars of Scouting Tag - Service!

You can use the above links to find the location of these Travel Bugs and go out and find the cache, and grab the Travel Bug, then release it in another "geocache". You can watch these Travel Bugs as they travel the country.

Race to 2010 "Pinewood Derby Car" Travel Bug

To participate in the council's Geocache event you will need an account with Geocaching.com. It is free! Go to Geocaching.com to signup, today!

Pinewood Derby cars representing every council will race across America via the Geocaching community starting on March 6th, 2010. The cars will be Travel Bugs®, moving from cache to cache across America. Scouts and Scouters can track their car's progress, read posted comments, and log the miles it travels on Geocaching.com. The finish line? Fort A.P. Hill in Virginia for the 2010 National Scout Jamboree!

Here's the link for Chief Seattle Council's Pinewood Derby Car:

TB2RBCJ BSA Race to 2010: Chief Seattle Council Orca Derby Car

You can follow the progress of this Pinewood Derby car as it starts it way from a cache on the Kitsap Peninsula and travels "cache to cache" back to Virginia!

All of the Pinewood Derby cars that arrive at the Jamboree will be displayed in a special geocaching area in ― Technology Quest.

Prizes will be awarded for the Pinewood Derby cars that travel the farthest, pass through the most hands, or have the most creative routes. But if your car doesn't make it to the Jamboree, don't worry. You're still eligible. Geocaching.com will log how many miles each car travels. So, we'll know if it went the distance — even if that distance doesn't lead it to Virginia. After the Jamboree, we'll release the cars again to continue their race ... around the world.
