Being an Arrowman in your Unit

You were elected by your fellow Scouts to the Order not so much for what you have done, but for what you are expected to do. You were elected as an inspirational outdoor leader in your unit and your membership in the Order will serve to strengthen your responsibility as this leader in your unit, rather than draw you away in another program of activities and service projects. You will prove the unit election by appearing in ten months and qualifying for brotherhood membership. Ordeal membership is the time of proving the value of your election. It is sealed in the brotherhood ceremony. Here are the areas to which you are expected to lead and serve.

"Tenas Chakchak" by R. L. Sleight (1984)

The purpose of the Order of the Arrow is:

  • To recognize those campers — Scouts and Scouters — who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives and by such recognition cause other campers to conduct themselves in such manner as to warrant recognition.
  • To develop and maintain camping traditions and spirit.
  • To promote Scout camping, which reaches its greatest effectiveness as a part of the unit's camping program, both year-round and in the summer camp, as directed by the camping committee of the council.
  • To crystallize the Scout habit of helpfulness into a life purpose of leadership in cheerful service to others.
