Cascade District Pinewood Derby 2012 Rules and Regulations
This is the first time in years that the Cascade District is putting on a district-wide Pinewood Derby open to all Cub Scouts and their families. A volunteer committee has been working hard to develop all the rules and regulations. We ask that all Cub Scout families to please abide by these rules and that all adults model good sportsmanship for the children.
Race Date and Location: *Please note the date change due to staffing conflict
Saturday, March 31, 2012 at Factoria Mall in the South Court, near the indoor Target entrance.
Check-In Times:
3:30PM check-in begins (cars will be inspected & weighed)
6:50PM SHARP check in ends (we cannot accept any more entries after this time as we have to set up the computer race brackets)
Racing begins as soon as all car entries are complete in the computer software (estimated 7:00-7:10PM)
Race Categories:
- Current Cub Scout Race – this is for currently registered Cascade District Cub Scouts in uniform, and the cars must have been constructed within the last 365 days. Webelos who have recently crossed over to Boy Scouts must race in the Boy Scout Race. Registration is FREE!
- Younger Sibling and Sisters Car Race – for Cub Scout siblings and sisters who have constructed a car within the last 365 days. Age Limit is 10 and under. Registration is FREE!
- Boy Scout and Older Sisters Race – Car must have been constructed within the last 365 days. This category is where Webelos who have recently crossed over to Boy Scouts race. Registration is FREE!
- Adult Car Race - This category is for adults who have built a car within the last 365 days. $5 REGISTRATION FEE.
- Vintage Car Race- For cars constructed over a year ago or longer. This category is for the Dads or other adults who built a car many years ago when they were a Cub Scout. $5 REGISTRATION FEE.
Registration fees are accepted in cash (exact amounts only please) or check payable to CSC Cascade District. Sorry, we can’t accept credit cards or debit cards for the payment of registration fees.
Who Can Race?
Any currently registered Cascade District Cub Scout in uniform can race in Category A, regardless of how well his car raced in his Pack’s Pinewood Derby.
Cascade District 2012 Pinewood Derby Race Car Design and Construction Rules for Categories A, B, C, and D:
- Cars must be newly constructed within the last 365 days. (If you have an older brother’s car from last year, or a really old car your Dad may have built when he was young, then there is a special race category for it)
- Overall height of car (from the wheel/track contact point) shall not exceed 4½ inches at any point along the length of the car.
- Overall width of car shall not exceed 2¾ inches at any point along the length of the car.
- The minimum width between the wheels shall be 1¾ inches so the car will clear the center guide strip on the track.
- The minimum clearance shall be 3/8 inch so the car will clear the center guide strip on the track.
- Overall length of the car shall not exceed 7 inches.
- The wheel base (distance between the front and rear axles) may not be changed from the kit body distance of 4 ½ inches.
- No portion of the car is to extend past the starting peg. . . so that means no undercutting in the body design.
- Weight of the car shall not exceed 5 ounces (141.5 grams). Ballast may be added to the car to achieve the maximum weight. The reading of the official scale at inspection time shall be considered final. (It may be different than your scale.)
- Any extra weight you have added must be securely attached – NO TAPING!
- Only axles, wheels, and body provided in the Cub Scout “Official Grand Prix Pinewood Derby Kit” can be used.
- Decorative accessories and decals may be used on the cars within the size and weight limitations noted above.
- Wheel bearings, washers, and bushings are prohibited.
- Axle wheel coverings are prohibited.
- No lubricating oil may be used. Axles may be lubricated with powdered graphite prior to the start of racing.
- Wheel may be lightly sanded to smooth out molding imperfections. The contact surface of the wheel must be flat as it sits on the track. There shall be no grooves, slots, extruded edges, or significant rounding of the contact surface which would give the car a competitive advantage.
- The car shall not ride on any kind of spring.
- The car must be freewheeling with no starting devices or other type of propulsion.
- No loose materials of any kind are allowed on the car.
- The Race Officials have the right to disqualify those cars that do not meet the above specs and for any other reason that constitutes foul play.
Awards:
Category A Awards will be given to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place Tigers, Wolves, Bears, and Webelos. A final cub scout race with the winners of each rank will be run for an overall Cascade District 1st , 2nd, and 3rd place winners.
1st , 2nd, and 3rd place recognitions will be awarded in Categories B, C, D, and E also.
Conduct:
- Cub Scouts and adults are expected to show “Scout Spirit” throughout the event. Good sportsmanship with a “Do Your Best” attitude is required.
- “The Scout Law” and “The Law of the Pack” are the way of the day.
- Participants must respect the rules, and respect each other at all times.
- Acting in a “Un-Scout” like manner will result in being disqualified and asked to leave.
- Race Officials are volunteers for this event, so please respect their decisions.
- Arguing with Race Officials is considered non-sportsman like conduct.
