Training
First and Foremost: Youth Protection PDF Print E-mail

Every leader must have valid Youth Protection training, completed once every two years. By doing so, the Boy Scouts of America best ensures the safety of each participant.

This can be completed in about thirty minutes at the national website with a certificate to print and submit with your Adult Registration. It is also recommended that this topic is reviewed by leaders and parents each spring as it is opposite the calendar when most programs get under way with the school year in the fall and additonally occurs before the busy summer camp season.

*Attention* In order to recharter for 2012, all Scoutmasters, Varsity Coaches, and Venture Advisors must be fully trained with the outdoor training and classroom. Contact the Training Chair as you need. Cubmasters must also be fully trained, which can be completed with an account at www.scouting.org.

To be officially trained, four simple components of learning must be completed: Youth Protection, Fast Start, This is Scouting, and Position-Specific Leader Training. Once these are completed, the Scout Leader can wear the "Trained" patch. Supplemental training regarding water, weather, and physical safety are also offered.

Please concider Roundtable part of your Scouting experience. Roundtable meetings are the on-going support of all scouting programs in our area.

The following has been adapted from Seattlebsa.org's Training pages

"Fast Start" Training

Fast Start training is for all new leaders and should be taken immediately upon registering and before meeting with any youth members; along with Youth Proctection training as stated. Fast Start is available through the BSA Online Learning Center or on DVD, available through our district Training Chair. To take online, you will be asked to sign in to MyScouting. If you are new to scouting, you will be asked to create a MyScouting account. Your account will keep track of your certificates of completion and supply all the training options available to you that is supported by online curicculuum.

New leaders choose the Fast Start they need for their position:

  • Cubmaster (C72)
  • Tiger Cub Leader (C73)
  • Webelos Den Leader (C71)
  • Wolf/Bear Cub Den Leader (C70)
  • Pack Committee (C70)
  • Boy Scouting Leader or Varsity Scout Leader (WSFS)
  • Venturing Crew Leader (WPFS)
  • Scout Parents Unit Coordinator (WCFS)
  • Unit Commissioner (WDUC)

"This is Scouting"

This Is Scouting (WA01) is an online training session [replacing New Leader Essentials]. Its six modules of training continue where Fast Start ends by conveying the perspective and goals for all  leaders of the Boy Scouts of America:

  1. The Mission of Scouting
  2. Programs for All ages
  3. Scouting Is Fun
  4. Scouting in the Community
  5. Keeping Our Youth Safe
  6. Scouting’s Legacy

This is Scouting training takes about an hour to complete and can also be found in the MyScouting Online Learning Center as well.

"Position-Specific" Training

Leader position-specific training is based on the leader’s position in their unit's program. Many of these courses are given online by accessing your MyScouting account. They are also taught locally by trainers who promote learning the material in fun ways. Please note that any of these courses are offered by the district or council as group training which may be done as small groups or by personal coaching.

Components involving outdoor skills directly by Boy Scouts, Varsity, and Venturing programs require an element of training to be done in person.  "BALOO," outdoor skills for Cub Scouting is available but not required.

Youth Leader Training

Scouting's purpose is to help youth become skilled leaders. This is taught through the Scouting program, and occurs mostly inside the unit as youth lead each other.

In addition, there are some additional trainings available. Check with the council for dates and information.

National Youth Leadership Training (Boy Scouts)

The National Yough Leadership Training is a six-day outdoor experience for troop and team youth leaders. It is conducted by the council leadership training committee, based on an outline approved by the Boy Scouts of America. NYLT uses outdoor skills and activities as methods of instruction.

Purpose:
To give each participant a varied experience in Scoutcraft skills. To relate candidate's unit job to the skills of leadership that will be taught. To give participants opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences with others. And above all to have fun.

All participants must be at least 13 years old by the date of the course, and be at least a First Class Scout. All participants must bring a completed Class 3 physical form with them on the first day of NYLT.

Kodiak/Nature of Leadership Trek (Venturing)

Leadership and service to others are two key tenants of Venturing, the Boy Scouts of America's fastest growing teenage program. Combine these two elements and you get the concept of "the servant leader". Servant leadership as a philosophy teaches that the leader works with and through a team to accomplish the mission. Rather than just talking about leadership, Venturing through the new Kodiak Trek teaches useable, relevant leadership skills that every teen can use.

Methods:
Challenging high adventure trek. Participants come from around the Council. Team taught by two instructors per Crew of 8-12. Uses hands on learning approach with very short presentations. Constant reinforcement. Creates a leadership fraternity.

All participants must be registered Venturers (youth only). Be at least 16 years old. Have physical capability for a specific trek and have outdoor skills for a specific trek.
