Memories of Camp
Summer is my favorite time of the year! Summer is when thousands of Scouts are leaving the game systems at home and spending some time with nature. Camps are in full swing and the reports are positive.
I have experienced camps from many different views. Being the daughter of a Scout professional, our family spent a great deal of time at Boy Scout camps. I caught my first fish with a bamboo pole at Boy Scout camp. I even almost drowned in the lake at Boy Scout camp. What great memories! Then I had the opportunity to serve as the Boy Scout Summer Camp Director for three years in Missouri. So I got to experience camp from a leadership role. Let me tell you, the first summer was tough! The second and third years were great and attendance improved as well as customer service. I have great memories of those camps!
Another way I got to experience summer camp was as a parent. When my boys were young I attended resident camp with them and we had such a great time! My youngest son caught the biggest fish during camp and he was so proud! My oldest son learned how to shoot a BB gun and actually hit the bull's eye. I will always cherish these memories.
Last summer when my youngest son returned home from summer camp, I asked him how it went. Understand that he is a very quiet child who doesn't talk a great deal. Well, after I asked him the question about camp, he didn't stop talking for two hours! He was so excited. He had earned four merit badges, earned Master Camper, and made a really cool stool. He made new friends, learned new skills, and simply had a great time. He even seemed more grownup. I will remember this day forever.
Making great memories that last a lifetime is what camping is all about and that is happening at Camp Pigott, Camp Parsons, and Camp Brinkley. I am grateful to the outstanding staff that provided great programs to the Scouts; to the leaders that took the time away from families and spent a week of vacation to bring the Scouts to camp; and to the parents that trusted us to take care of your boys. Thank you!
I hope the memories will last their lifetime! Sharon M. Moulds
Adventure Base 100 Tour coming up: Volunteers Wanted! It won't be long until September is here and we'll need several Scout volunteers to not only visit but volunteer at the Adventure Base 100 Tour that's coming to the Puyallup Fair September 17-19th. This is one of the only stops in the Pacific Northwest for this nationally celebrated event. We're coordinating efforts with the Pacific Harbors Council and we still need a lot of volunteers to commit to at least one of the three days. Email Darla Sklar if you want to receive special entry to the fair by helping out at the Adventure Base 100 Tour this September!
2010 Popcorn Sale It's not too late to register for the popcorn fundraiser! Click HERE to commit your pack/troop/crew/post to participate in the fall sale (if you have not already). The popcorn sale runs for about a month and Scouts are able to enjoy the rest of the year playing and paying their way through Scouting. Just imagine what your Scouts could do with an extra $5000 or even $2000 to fund their adventures. Trips? Equipment?...
Be sure to attend a council training! Trained adults are happy leaders. This year's Kickoff will be on Saturday, August 28th at 10:00 AM at the Seattle Service Center and is just for all the unit kernels and leaders that want to get the full scoop on the popcorn sale. Every unit kernel that attends a training - dates on popcorn webpage - will receive a "Sale in a Box" kit filled with promotional materials to make your sale more fun and manageable.
BONUS: All adult leaders that attend the Kickoff or training will be entered into a prize drawing for the chance to win a GPS unit, Scout Shop gift card, or even an iPad! Winners will be announced at the end of each training.
100th Anniversary Service Projects
We're more than half way through the centennial year of the BSA and we still have service projects to complete. We'd like to ask for your support of this initiative! Please click HERE to view an interactive Google map and select a project that your pack, troop, crew or post is willing to complete to help make our community a better place. Folks know they can count on the Boy Scouts, so let's not let them down.
IMPT! This Saturday, August 6th is a work party with Washington Trails Association (WTA) and we need 10 Scouts (youth and leaders combined) to make this happen. Please email Darla Sklar right away if your troop or crew would like to take this on.
*Some projects may be suitable for Eagle projects.
Commissioner's Corner
by Kevin Baker This month's e-TOTEM comes from Fort A.P. Hill, Caroline County Virginia and the National Jamboree. Arrival for me was one week prior to the start of this centennial celebration. Participating in the preparation for an event this size has been quite an experience and at times a challenge. I should never ever complain again about the weather in the Northwest. We have humidity but add 90 to 100+ degree heat to that and "welcome to Virginia". From that first Monday, the population of the Jamboree has increased day by day, culminating with an enormous jump in numbers as the Scouts arrived on the 26th of July…the first day of the Jamboree. There are four "Action Centers" that provide quite an assortment of activities for the Scouts.
I've had the pleasure of working with some exceptional Scouters in the Action Center "C" (Western Region). A lot of people come from all over the USA to set the stage for this Jamboree. I am amazed and gratified to see the dedication of so many people who all share in the vision for making Scouting and this Jamboree such an outstanding experience for the youth attending. The adults have a great time too! But so much of that "fun" is watching the youth have such a great time. By the time you read this, the Jamboree will be just a memory…but a very lasting memory…a once in a life time opportunity! Thank you for all you do for Scouting and the youth of our community.
And the winner is... Chief Seattle Council! The Chief Seattle Council has maintained their innovative marketing approach and has made their mark on the 12th Annual President's Awards for Marketing Excellence. We took home the gold (or better yet.. crystal trophy!) in four categories, which included:
Best e-newsletter for the monthly e-Totem you are reading right now. The best Web site (many thanks to Rob Rosamond and Bob Zook for our new site); and best positive public relations efforts, thanks to our new online Press Room that was designed, created and maintained by 100th Anniversary committee member Wendy Wiley. Lastly, we were awarded for best multicultural efforts with a pilot project that involved a social networking site designed for Scoutreach units to communicate and pair up with strong, traditional Boy Scout troops to further promote cross unit outings and youth leadership among their peers.

Camp Pigott Update Close to 1,000 Scouts and their leaders from 88 troops are in attendance this summer. The efforts of many are responsible for major improvements to the property such as expanding the COPE course, building a new craft lodge, developing the Scout Skills program area, building a new archery range, remodeling the rifle range, constructing a mountain bike skills course and mountain boarding course, rebuilding the swim docks, constructing the new shotgun range, new staff housing, campsite development, remodeling the dining hall, landscaping and developing our new campfire bowl.
Camp Director Dan Gelis and his National Camp School trained staff are delivering on the promise to provide an unforgettable experience to our Scouts. Thanks to all involved for making Camp Pigott one of the best camps in the country.
Please visit our website, www.SeattleBSA.org for detailed information about Chief Seattle Council camping opportunities.

Camp Parsons Update The building fondly known as the "SMG" or "The Grill" is the oldest permanent structure at Parsons, dating back to 1919. It served for many years as the camp dining hall and more recently has housed the trading post and camp Scoutmaster training meetings. The list of improvements for the SMG includes shoring up the foundation, installation of a new front deck, new metal roofing, insulation in the walls and roof, new windows, and remodeling the interior of the building. Plans call for the camp administrative offices to be housed in the rear of the SMG, the enlarged main room will be used for leader meetings and training sessions. The trading post will temporarily move to the current admin building for the 2010 camp season.
Completion of the Copper City shower/restroom will complete a systematic upgrade of all such facilities at Parsons over the last decade. Past occupants of this site will more fully appreciate the improvements represented by the new building with individual showers, new ADA bathrooms, and a metal roof. Funding for these projects was provided by the camp maintenance endowment fund and by the Grant Myers estate, designated specifically for capital improvements at Camp Parsons.
If you would like to assist the Parsons adult work parties with these and other projects, please send us an email at campingdept@seattlebsa.org and we will add your name to the list.
Close to 3,400 Scouts and their leaders from 210 troops are in attendance this summer. Camp Director Ken McEdwards and his National Camp School trained staff continue to deliver on the promise to provide an unforgettable experience to our Scouts. Thanks to all involved for making Camp Parsons one of the best in the country.

Soccer & Scouting Its been an exciting summer this year for the Soccer and Scouting program. We recently hosted our first ever Soccer week, which we planned and carried out with the help of the Washington Youth Soccer Association. The week was a success, we registered around 100 kids, and all of them had a lot of fun, and learned a lot of both soccer and the values of Scouting. We also are coming up on Summer Camp at Camp Pigott and Brinkley. The Boy Scouts were at Pigott beginning on July 25th and the Cub Scouts headed to Brinkley on July 28th. It was certainly an exciting time for both.
If you are interested in helping out with Soccer and Scouting, contact Luis Garcia (206) 948-8363 or CJ Timm (425) 516-2983 for more information.
