Please Welcome Our New Scout Executive, Sharon Moulds
Sharon M. Moulds is the new Scout Executive of the Chief Seattle Council. Ms. Moulds most recently served as the Area 6 Director in the Central Region and has joined our council as of June 1. To say Sharon has Scouting in her blood would be an understatement. Her father was a Scouting professional for 39 years and she has served in five different councils in eight different leadership positions over the last 25 years including Scout executive in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She is Wood Badge trained, Vigil Member of the Order of the Arrow and active member of her son's Boy Scout Troop. Please join us in welcoming Sharon, her husband Al and their two sons to the Chief Seattle Council.

Tom Pigott, new council president
Tom is currently founder and president of Candela Hotels, a luxury hospitality management company. Previously, Tom was a venture partner with Buerk Dale Victor LLC, a Northwest private equity firm. In 1998 Tom founded Soma.com, the world's first internet pharmacy. The company was successfully acquired by CVS Corporation, the second largest retail pharmacy chain in the U.S.; Tom became CEO of CVS.com and a corporate officer within CVS. Tom currently serves on the board of Catholic Community Services and is our newest Board President of the Chief Seattle Council of Boy Scouts, and is himself an Eagle Scout. He holds a B.A. in international relations from Stanford University.

It's Time to Signup for the Popcorn Sale!
Last year's popcorn sale was the largest and most successful ever for our council. Packs, troops, and crews earned over $500,000 in commissions to pay for all their exciting Scouting activities, trips and equipment for the year.

Were you part of it? If not, know that this centennial year PROMISES to be even bigger than before as Trails End products are Better Than Ever. Click here to watch a short video about our new packaging. A Scout can participate in the sale individually, although it's a lot more fun when everyone gets in on the action. The traditional fall sale begins in September, and now is the time to sign up!

Click above to sign up and lock in the new and improved 25% base commission! And remember, online sales are available year-round for Scouts looking to start saving for next year's summer camp. For more details about the Trail's End popcorn sale, you may visit the council's popcorn webpage.

Calling all Scouts: the Community Needs your Help!
For 100 years Scouts have been known for doing a 'good turn'. We need every pack, troop and crew to keep that legacy alive by selecting just one of the service projects that have been requested by our community. Click here for an interactive Google map to find a project near you.

Our goal is to complete 100 projects by the end of 2010! We really don't want to turn anyone down since we're the Scouts and are known to be 'helpful, courteous and kind', but we can't do it alone. Please don't delay, pick your project now and let us know the details. All participating units will receive special recognition as centennial BSA supporters. A Message from Our Council President
The month of June is already upon and we are about to begin another busy summer camping season. To our Scoutmasters, I hope that your troops will have the chance to visit one of our Boy Scout Summer Camps this year, either Camp Parsons or Camp Pigott. Both of these camps have undergone significant program improvements and additions. To our Pack Leaders, Camp Brinkley is open and ready for all of our young Cub Scouts to have a great time. Please be sure to visit!

Summer is always a very active, fun-filled time for us Scouters as we get outside and experience the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest. It is also a good time to review the Guide to Safe Scouting to make sure your activities are conducted in a safe manner. Please make sure your vehicles have seatbelts for all passengers and proper insurance!

After a spring filled with graduations, childrens sporting events, and other activities, I hope that your summer is relaxing but at the same time adventurous and memorable.

So, please get outdoors and enjoy the best part of Scouting!
-- Tom Pigott

New Eagle Scouts are "Marked Men"
On May 12th, a number of commmunity supporters and Distinguished Eagle Scouts got on stage to congratulate the new class of Eagles at this year's Eagle Banquet and Centennial Celebration. Among them was Phil Smart, Sr. who said the new class of Eagles that they were "marked men". One of the events co-hosts, Brad Tilden, Eagle Scout and President of Alaska Airlines was inducted into the elite group of Distinbguished Eagles that night.

Matt Hasselbeck, Quarterback of the Seattle Seahawks provided the Keynote speech, a sincere and simple message that included him addressing the 214 new initiates about leadership and the responsibility they have to carry on the legacy of their predecessors. During his 15-minute speech, the veteran quarterback, whose father-in-law is an Eagle Scout, shared experiences from his childhood, college life and pro career that have developed and honed his leadership qualities, with the intention of passing the lessons on to Seattle's newest Eagle Scouts. "You are marked men," Hasselbeck said. "Continue to lead; continue to serve."

Commissioner's Corner
by Kevin Baker
The 2010 BSA National Meeting has just concluded in Dallas. I am very excited about the focus and direction of Scouting as we move forward into our 2nd century of Scouting. For this e-Totem I especially wanted to share my experience while attending the "Duty to God Breakfast" as well as the "Americanism Breakfast". Both were very inspirational. .. Read more here.

Eagle Scouts Flying High

Fifty new Eagle Scouts were selected to take a ride on a brand new Boeing 737 delivery flight for Alaska Airlines on Thursday, May 27th, complete with Eagle Scout, Captain Tom Rogers for their pilot.

Scouts boarded the plane and flew to SeaTac Airport by a scenic route: First passing over Mason Lake, then Camp Parsons, then Camps Pigott and Brinkley, then Steven's Pass, Snoqualmie Pass, Mount Rainier and finally Olympia. Unfortunately, everything except part of Camp Parsons, Puget Sound and Olympia were clouded over, but everyone still had fun because the flight attendants asked the group trivia questions about Alaska Airlines.

Thank you Alaska Airlines for continuing to go above and beyond for the Scouts of this community!

Scout Day with the Mariners - a Grand Slam!

Over 4,000 Scouts and their families attended the centennial Scout Day with the Mariners on May 1st. Highlights:

- Two first pitches: Eagle Scout Tennessee Abbott, great grandson of first Eagle Scout in America and long time BSA volunteer, Phil Smart, Sr.

- Several BSA highlights on the big screen
- Mariner Moose wore BSA uniform!

Big Changes at Camp Pigott

We are in the final stretch at Camp Pigott as we work to complete 16 construction projects prior to the opening of the 2010 summer camp season. The resulting new facilities will help us provide an outstanding summer camp experience while also adding several key features that will be available for year-round use. We are excited about these upgrades and additions and can't wait until summer when Scouts can enjoy all that Camp Pigott has to offer. Click here to read more.

Camp Parsons Update
The adult work parties have been extremely busy and productive this winter as work continues to construct a new shower/restroom facility at Copper City campsite as well as repairs and restoration of the Silver Marmot Grill.

Completion of the Copper City shower/restroom will complete a systematic upgrade of all such facilities at Parsons over the last decade. Past occupants of this site will more fully appreciate the improvements represented by the new building with individual showers, new ADA bathrooms, and a metal roof.

The building fondly known as the "SMG" or "The Grill" is the oldest permanent structure at Parsons, dating back to 1919. It served for many years as the camp dining hall and more recently has housed the trading post and camp Scoutmaster training meetings. The list of improvements for the SMG includes shoring up the foundation, installation of a new front deck, new metal roofing, insulation in the walls and roof, new windows, and remodeling the interior of the building. Plans call for the camp administrative offices to be housed in the rear of the SMG, the enlarged main room will be used for leader meetings and training sessions. The trading post will temporarily move to the current admin building for the 2010 camp season.

Funding for these projects was provided by the camp maintenance endowment fund and by the Grant Myers estate, designated specifically for capital improvements at Camp Parsons.

If you would like to assist the Parsons adult work parties with these and other projects, please send us an email at campingdept@seattlebsa.org and we will add your name to the list.

The Right Stuff
by Kent Brooten

OK, I admit it, I am a little anal about some things. (If you ask my Scouts, they’ll probably tell you I’m a little anal about A LOT of things!). One of course would be cotton. It boggles my mind anyone would wear cotton on a Boy Scout outing. This past weekend I saw so many blue jeans that I was considering going into the kerosene wick business... Cub Scouts Blast Off!
Day Camp 2010

Day Camp season is fast approaching and IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO SIGN UP! This year's theme is Cub Scouts BLAST OFF!

Cub Scout day camp involves the efforts of pack and district volunteers to create an educational, inspirational and fun experience for Tiger Cubs, Cub Scouts and Webelos. The camp program is carefully designed by a committee of experienced camp leaders, guided by parents' suggestions.

Directors are certified by the National Camping School of the Boy Scouts of America. Camps are available beginning the week of July 5th with the last camp held the week of August 2nd. Contact your district Day Camp Director or District Executive for more information and to register. Registration materials are also available on our website in our Cub Scout Camping section. See you there!

Summer Camp Updates
Camp Parsons and Camp Pigott staffs are hired and have begun planning for the summer. Camp Brinkley staff still has a few available positions. All three camps have lots of Counselor-in-Training positions open for every week of the summer. To be a CIT, click here to download the application and mail it to the council office. CITs don't need an interview, just let us know which week you would like to come to camp. There is no fee for CITs, but they must be at least 14 and under 18.

Also, all Boy Scouts should be aware that they can attend Camp Parsons or Camp Pigott without their troop leadership. If a Scout or several Scouts would like to go to camp and be part of the provisional Adventure Troop, this is also available every week of summer camp. Adult staff members will serve as the scoutmasters for the provisional troop made of 5-10 scouts from all over forming a troop together for one week. Sign up here.

Scoutreach Luncheon with NFL Hall of Famer Jim Brown

The sixth annual Scoutreach Luncheon and Golf Social raised over $130,000 for the Chief Seattle Council's inner-city Scoutreach efforts at the Golf Club at Newcastle. With Hall of Famers Bill Russell and Warren Moon in the audience, NFL Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown inspired the crowd while being interviewed by First Class Scout, JJ Ruffin.

It was evident that everyone in attendance had a great time, and Jim Brown was presented a Soccer and Scouting shirt signed by youth participating in the program.

A BIG thank you to the following people who without their help the event would not have been such a success: Jim Brown, Camp Parsons Staff, Craig Edwards, Reid Johnson, Firoz Lalji, Raymond Lee, Warren Moon, Thach Nguyen, Scott Oki, Paul Pineda, Steve Pool, Greg Porter, Bill Russell, and Ryan Yee.

Youth Safety is the No. 1 Concern of the BSA
To increase awareness of this societal problem and to create even greater barriers to abuse than already exist today in Scouting, the Boy Scouts of America is implementing several important changes to further enhance its Youth Protection policies.

Effective June 1, 2010:
- Youth Protection training is required for all registered volunteers.
- New leaders are required to take Youth Protection training before they submit an application for registration. The certificate of completion for this training must be submitted at the time application is made and before volunteer service with youth begins.
- Youth Protection training must be taken every two years. If a volunteer's Youth Protection training record is not current at the time of recharter, the volunteer will not be reregistered.
