Membership Update
by Lisa Wylie - Council VP, Membership
During the past year a small group of volunteers have been developing a website just for membership. During my visits to units, roundtables, and any gathering of Scouts I have heard that people would like to know where to find recruiting ideas and tools, information about Scouting programs, and who to contact for help. The website is now complete and ready for your use.
To find the website go to the Chief Seattle Council home page at SeattleBSA.org and from the dropdown menu under Scouting select Membership, located at the bottom of the list. This will take you to the Membership Home page. In the future, look for current information on membership events and hints on building a successful program on this page.
Under Membership Contacts you will find the District Membership Chairs. Direct contact information will be added as we gain permission. This site is public; anyone who enters the website will be able to view the list of membership chairs.
The Scout Membership site is also public. I encourage you to direct families looking for information about Scouting to this page. The site provides information on Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturing using links to the national website. We also have a link to "Scouts and Parents", a wonderful site providing valuable tips on what it is to be a part of the Scouting Family.
The final piece is our Recruiting Ideas and Tools website. This site is not available to the general public. To gain access you must create a login id. The site lists recruiting materials for Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturing. Let me know what you think. If you have a successful recruiting tip I would love to hear about it. The website will be updated and new ideas and tips added as they are submitted.
I would love to hear from you about what you think about the website, what you would like to see in the future. Great ideas come from you, our great volunteers.

Commissioner's Corner
"Delivering the promise!" I've talked about this before. How are we doing? For the most part, I think we are doing very well. There are many factors that help make the difference, but the common denominator is dedicated parents/volunteers that will find the time…no matter what… to work with their child to help guide them through a rewarding Scouting experience. But it doesn't stop with just their child because they see the value in the investment made to the group…the unit. I had the pleasure of attending an Eagle Court of Honor recently where four young men were honored for their accomplishments. What I experienced was a truly gratifying example of "delivering the promise" in action. The families and extended families of these Eagle Scouts gave a lot to ensure that these young men had the opportunity to be successful. Sure, it was up to them to stay involved, earn the ranks and merit badges and ultimately to demonstrate leadership and complete their project. But they didn't do it alone. These families know about investment in our future and our community. This is just an example of the tireless effort given to our movement by so many dedicated volunteers throughout our council. Thank you for finding the time to give back! Your son or daughter might not thank you now...but they will! You can count on that.
Yours in Scouting!
Kevin

Venturing Update

April 1-3 was Chief Seattle Council's first General Assembly Meeting (GAM) for the Venturing Officers' Association! People began to roll into Camp Parsons on Friday evening and were immediately engulfed in introductory games. Forming a circle, which grew and grew until it created a perimeter around the entire room, we all played games ranging "Baby, I love you. Won't you please give me a smile" to Ridin' Pony. I for one loved them all! It was a wonderful opportunity to meet my fellow Venturers and for the shier individuals to warm up for the weekend.
Saturday morning started with a little rain and delicious pancakes then the fun started. At 9 o'clock participants ran (I know I saw a few!) to be first for activities. Some popular ones were tomahawk throwing, kayaking to Octopus Point, and the shooting range. There was also a first aid demo and fire building class.
The meeting portion of GAM began around 1pm when all of the participants and staff gathered at the pier for a group photo. With high spirits despite the drizzle and a strong feeling of camaraderie, we wandered back to the dining hall. Congregated in our Class A's, I spoke about the importance of GAM and what the event means for the future. I described the accomplishments of this year, including the Venturing Winter Challenge and future events. Our next event is September 23-25 at Camp Parsons. Once the "business" was done, the participants divided into two groups. The officers, vice presidents and presidents, gathered in one area and the other participants created skits.
The officers then elected their next VOA president, Emily Ferree of Crew 115, our current VP of Communications. The future vice presidents are still to be determined in mid-May.
With dusk approaching quickly, we assembled at the Fire Bowl. First we congratulated the recipients of the Venturing Leadership Award. Once everyone was applauded and hugs given, groups began acting out their skits to the appreciation of those watching. They were funny and clever and were also done in randomly selected groups. Participants had a chance to meet and work with Venturers from other crews.
See you at the next event!

GOOD TURN CORNER

For over 100 years, the Boy Scouts of America has taught the principles of the Scout Oath and Law through community service and "helping other people at all times." Good Turn for America (GTFA) is the name under which all that Scouting service happens across the nation and provides a structure in which unit service is recognized and recorded.
Service projects may include, but are not limited to: planting trees, sending care packages to military units overseas, collecting food in Scouting for Food, picking up garbage around your community, etc.
Report your service hours here to count towards your Journey to Excellence Award.
For more Good Turn for America information or community service ideas for your Scouting unit, visit the new reporting page on Scouting.org!

Opportunity for Fun on the Water: Consider Sea Scouts!
The Scout motto, "Be Prepared", is seriously practiced here. The challenge is being able
to take your vessel from Point A to Point B, while being ready for whatever you may
encounter along the way. This is what makes Sea Scouting great.
Sea Scouting is organized to promote better citizenship and to improve youth members'
boating skills and knowledge through instruction and practice in water safety; outdoor, social and service experiences; and knowledge of our maritime heritage.
In our council we have a number of "ships" offering sail and power boat programs (click
HERE for list of "ship programs"). If you are a Scout leader please consider partnering
with a local "ship" that can help complement your troop/crew program, and at the same
time provide another Scouting experience for your Scouts/Venturers.
New Robotics Merit Badge!
This recent addition was developed in part by one of our council's own volunteers, Rick Tyler of robotics Venture Crew 2036. Check out the full scoop here.

Change to Governor's Congratulatory Letter
The Governor's Office has notified us that they are no longer providing individual congratulatory letters for recipients of the Eagle Scout Award, due to staffing cuts and budget reductions. The Governor understands that completing the work required to receive the award is a large undertaking, and she still wants to acknowledge the accomplishment. The Governor's Office is providing a template containing the Governor's signature that you may fill out and present to your Scout. The certificate works well when created on a PC. The results are not as predictable on a Mac. Find the form here. We apologize for the inconvenience and ask that you share this message with your troop.
