Troops are more successful when the leaders understand how BSA thinks troops should operate. It just is not enough that the leaders are good in the outdoors and like helping the boys. That's not enough to make a good troop, even if the leaders are Eagle Scouts themselves. For more information on any of these courses mentioned below, check with our district coordinator for Boy Scout leader training in the District Organization Chart. For information on when a course will be held, check our Boy Scout leader training calendar above (or again, check with the coordinator). If you cannot get to the training in our Sammamish Trails District, go to a course in another district. The training follows the same syllabus in all districts, and you will get most of the same information The advantage of going in your own district is that you get to work with people you will keep seeing in Scouting. New Leader EssentialsThis is a great 90-minute fundamental-level training course for all new and untrained Cub Scout, Boy Scout and Venturing Leaders, where you can learn what Scouting's all about, your role in it and where you can get help. See the main training page for more information on this cross-program introductory course. Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster Specific TrainingThis gives the basic information on how a troop is organized, how it should function, how the adults can help the Scouts get the most out of Scouting. The course takes a full day, or three evenings. It is open to all adults in Scouting. It is useful for any parent wanting to understand how Boy Scouting accomplishes its mission. This is part of the training expected for all Scoutmasters and assistant Scoutmasters and required of them to be considered "trained." For more information, check with our district coordinator for Boy Scout leader training in the District Organization Chart. Introduction to Outdoor Leader SkillsOne purpose of this course is to give Scout leaders the basic outdoor skills that a Scout must demonstrate to advance in rank up to First Class. The course also helps the leaders see exactly what it is the Scouts are to know. Some other features of the course include the Safety Awareness training, valuable for keeping Scouts safe and leaders out of trouble; Youth Protection; and "Scout's Own" observances. This is an overnight course. It takes either from Friday evening till Sunday afternoon, or else a Saturday and then Friday evening to Saturday afternoon. It typically runs from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon and is combined with the Webelos Leader "Outdoor Skills" training. Combining them lets an adult go just once and be credited with taking both courses. It also helps Webelos leaders see more of the Boy Scout outdoor program and lets Boy Scout leaders meet Webelos leaders.. Troop Committee ChallengeWe offer this regularly. Also, you can arrange to have a session just for your troop, or for a couple of troops. For more information, check with our district coordinator for Boy Scout leader training in the District Organization Chart.
