Scout Leader Training

Is Training Worth Your Time?

Yes!  As parents and volunteers in the Boy Scouts of America, we all want the best program for our children. And the best program means the best experience. So how do we get that? In large part by being the best leaders we can be. The Scout Oath begins with..."On My Honor I Will Do My Best..." As we set the example, we should expect nothing less of ourselves. Training affords us the best opportunity to be the best we can be.

If you want to provide a good program for your Scouts or Venturers, you want the knowledge and tools from training. Every Scout leader should take these courses:

Fast Start training (quick online orientation)
New Leader Essentials (basics of how Scouting is set up and how it works)
Basic, or position-specific, training (information on doing your Scouting role).
Wood Badge is good too, and we recommend it highly, though it is not required to be "trained" for your role (advanced, intense, fun course on small-group leadership).

For unit-specific training, please go to your program's web pages on the left-side navigation bar

On-line Fast Start Training

This will help you understand Scouting and how your unit should work.  This course, along with several other great courses, can be taken online at the BSA Online Learning Center web site.  If you don't have one already, you will be asked to create a user name and password to log into the course management system.

New Leader Essentials

This is a great 90-minute fundamental-level training course for all new and untrained Cub Scout, Boy Scout and Venturing Leaders, where you can learn what Scouting's all about, your role in it and where you can get help. This course is a pre-requisite for all the other courses, and we're running it often. It's FREE!. It is offered at every District Roundtable (except December and June) and in conjunction with many other trainings. Check the training calendar to verify when the next course is available or check with the District Training Chair.  A leader need only take it once. (Some people do take basic training courses before this, and that is allowed, but the other courses may make more sense if you have taken this first.)

This course is an overview of the core elements of Scouting, including:

What are we trying to accomplish?
Where do I fit in?
Where do I get help?
Who pays for Scouting?
How do I keep Scouting safe?

When can I wear the Trained patch?

Different amounts of training are required for different levels of the program. You are considered trained for your position, and can wear the "trained" patch, when you have completed all of the training segments appropriate for your program and position.  Click on this linked page, then look through the list to see what is required for your position.

Advanced training

Wood Badge

Wood Badge Training in small group leadership, Wood Badge for the 21st Century, was designed to be available to every leader (Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity, Venturing) within two years of becoming a leader. The only requirement is that the leader be trained for his or her registered position.

Powder Horn

Powder Horn is the premier high adventure resource management course. This site gives information about the course in general. Information on Chief Seattle courses will be posted on the training calendar when we get it.  Information on the 2008 course in Mt. Baker Council (just north of us) is online at http://www.mountbakerbsa.org/events/powderhorn.html
