Soccer and Scouting is an outreach program that uses soccer to recruit youth into the scouting program. Participants are largely comprised of 1st or 2nd generation immigrants from all over the world. It is our goal that these youth will become physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight through the scouting program
What we do
Participants are active in the following ways: three month long soccer seasons, week and day long soccer clinics, tournaments, pick-up games, and coaching and refereeing opportunities for the older boys and girls. We combine these events with opportunities to engage in Scouting activities which helps bring them all the values and opportunities that Scouting has to offer.
Who do we provide the program for?
Boys from ages 6-20 and girls from ages 14-20 may sign up and participate in every activity. Many of the people we recruit are immigrants or come from lower income families, but there are also many families that are not direct immigrants and have middle class incomes that participate in the program as well.
When
We meet in two places. We meet on Wednesdays at King of Kings Lutheran Church in Renton. Currently there are only Boy Scouts (boys age 11-17) and Venturing programs(boys and girls 14-20) at this location, but we are looking to expand and start a Cub Scout program in the near future. Our next meeting will be January 5th at 6:30 PM in the church's education wing located in the back of the church.
Our second location is at Midway Elementary in Des Moines. We have a Cub Scout program (boys ages 6-10) and are starting a Boy Scout program in January at our first meeting. The meetings here are held at 6:30 PM on Thursday evenings in the Multi-purpose room on the North side of the school. The next meeting will be on Thursday, January 13th.
