Scouting Hall of Fame...Who Will You Nominate?

The 100th Anniversary National Hall of Leadership is a one-time opportunity to recognize extraordinary individuals for the differences they make though their leadership. It is a simple but high-impact program that demonstrates how leadership changes lives.

Nominees must be living Scouts, Scouters, or volunteers who have served in that role for at least one year. There are no age requirements, and adult nominees do not need to be currently registered with the BSA. All adult nominees must have served or be currently serving as a Scouting volunteer. All youth nominees must be registered members of the BSA.

Beginning Feb. 8, 2009 — our 99th anniversary — and continuing through Aug. 31, 2009, people will submit nominations through the 100th Anniversary Web site: www.scouting.org/100years.

A total of 305 honored individuals — one national and one for each council—will be inductedinto the 100th Anniversary National Hall of Leadership. Inductees will be given national recognition to commemorate their leadership and dedication to living out Scouting virtues in service to others.

A Message From Council Commissioner Kevin Baker
Happy Anniversary to the Boy Scouts of America! February is the month of the year that we traditionally celebrate the birthday of Scouting. The BSA is entering its 99th year. As I said last month, with any new year it's natural to want to reflect on the last year and set our sights on the new. I believe it's always important to be looking forward and do our best to make this New Year the best ever in Scouting. And with any celebration, the more the merrier is part of my message. It's a great time for commissioners to celebrate with the units we serve. Unit leaders...don't forget to invite your Unit Commissioner to your Blue & Gold Banquet or to a Court of Honor or parent meeting. I hope you take advantage of these opportunities.

Commissioner Convention, March 21, 2009. This is your monthly reminder to ensure that commissioners have the date on your calendar. This convention will be a one day training event for ALL commissioners and will include training for Cub Scout, Boy Scout & Venturing Roundtable Commissioners and RT Commissioner Staff. There will be specific sessions for District Commissioners and Assistant District Commissioners and of course Unit Commissioners. Repeat from last month...You may have seen in the most recent edition of Scouting Magazine that the National Council supports a new recognition knot for commissioner service. The knot makes reference to a “PhD in Commissioner Science”. I want you to know that this knot will be attainable in our council but it will have a different name since we don't offer a “college”. The purpose of the knot is to recognize those commissioners who work very hard to improve the quality of commissioner service. So please stay tuned...more to come.

Here's another date for your calendar...The February Council Coordinated Meeting...February 26th at the Council Service Center. 7:00 PM. Glenn Schmitt, ACC for Boy Scout Roundtables is now on board. There will be a Boy Scout Roundtable breakout at the Council Coordinated meetings along with the Cub Scout Roundtable breakout, led by Cheri Pepka, that the Cub Scout RT commissioners and staff have enjoyed. Remember...Every Scout & youth member in the BSA deserves trained leaders. Unit leaders and everyone attending a monthly Roundtable deserves trained commissioners!

Set your 2009 Training goals now.

Scout Shop Corner
With Blue and Gold just around the corner, now's the time to make sure you are prepared for everything that you need. The Scout Shop have has all your paper banquet needs. Our Blue and Gold themed plates, cups, napkins, utensils, and centerpieces will add just the right touch to the ceremony. For those Webelos that are receiving their Arrow of Light, make sure you pick up the Ceremonial Arrow Kit at the Scout Shop. It's only $12.99 and is the perfect recognition gift to give to those Scouts who have worked so hard to get where they are now.

As we head into the next couple of months, more and more Webelos will be transitioning into the Boy Scouts. Make sure that they are properly attired and ready for that extra level of excitement that comes with Boy Scouting. The first thing your Boy Scout will need is the new Centennial Uniform. The shirts come in both cotton poplin and nylon materials and the zip-off pants in cotton canvas and nylon varieties. Never before has the Boy Scout uniform been as comfortable and fresh-looking as today!

Your new Boy Scout will also need to be prepared to camp. The Scout Shop offers an internal frame backpack made for transitioning Webelos in mind! With a $52.99 price tag, you won't be able to find a better deal anywhere else. The Scout Shop also has a good selection of sleeping bags. “The Pack” sleeping bag is rated to 30 degrees and is available for only $19.99. We also have a 15 degree sleeping back that is perfect for year-round camping. It comes with a stuff sack and costs $41.99.

Nowadays, we see more and more units getting custom items made for their Scouts to wear. Jackets, t-shirts, sweatshirts, and caps are just a few ways for your Scouts to be in uniform at informal events. These are just a few of the items that you order with just about anything you want embroidered or screen-printed on it. Call the Puget Sound Scout Shop at 206-721-5945 or the Bremerton Scout Shop at 360-373-2569 with your design ideas and we can get you a quote in a couple of days.

Friends of Scouting 2009 Underway
Thank you to the many donors who have already contributed to the 2009 FOS campaign. Green River District led the way in January with $28,200, followed by Foothills District with $17,047 and Aurora at $16,745.

If your pack, troop, team or crew has not finished its campaign, here are a few steps that will help you be recession proof:
  1. Promote your scheduled presentation well to achieve maximum attendance
  2. Collect donation cards that night rather than a 6 week campaign
  3. Contact alums of your unit. Several troops raise thousands from past scouts and leaders
  4. Set a personal goal of a card returned from every family
Achieve your goal by March 31st, 2009, and your unit will receive free advancement badges through 12/31/09 or a Pinewood Derby Car for each member of your pack!
