2009 FOS Kickoff
As we approach the holiday season, let's reflect on the gifts our Friends of Scouting have given to our 2008 Scouting program.

We have had a banner year in fundraising. This ensures our growing camps and programs will continue to receive the necessary funding to provide the highest Quality Scouting experience.

We have all felt the pressure of recent national issues both in our business operations and at home, which highlights the dedication of our financial supporters.

As the Chief Seattle Council approaches 100% of the 2008 Friends of Scouting goal, we would like an opportunity to thank our donors and District Finance teams for their continued support.

On November 20th, please join us for our 2008
campaign celebration and 2009 kickoff training.

You will:
  • Gain a greater understanding of Friends of Scouting
  • See an FOS presentation in action
  • Brush up on sales skills and techniques
  • Meet and discuss FOS with other presenters & coordinators
  • Enjoy refreshments and fellowship
This training is designed to save you time.
It will be fun, too! Scout's honor.

Silver Beaver Award
The Silver Beaver Award was established in 1931 and is presented for distinguished service to young people within a local Boy Scout council. It is the highest award a council can present and a recipient must be a registered adult member of the Boy Scouts of America.

Annually, volunteers nominate their peers who are doing an outstanding job for the Silver Beaver Award. These nominations are reviewed by the selection committee and the most outstanding are selected to receive this special recognition. The Silver Beaver Award presentation will be on March 10, 2009, at the Annual Council Meeting and Recognition Celebration.

The committee welcomes all nominations and encourages you to recommend those Scouters you believe worthy of this high honor. Nominations must be received by your local district executive no later than November 7th, 2008.

Nomination forms located here.

Popcorn Sale: Another Record Breaking Year!
Scouts in the Chief Seattle Council broke an all-time record by selling more than 1.4 million dollars worth of popcorn this year, a 15% increase! This successful sale will result in approximately $490,000 returned to packs, troops, and crews in the council. The money will directly support Scouting programs, enabling Scout groups to spend more time participating in Scouting activities and less time fundraising.

Reminders:
Thur-Sat, Nov 13-15 -- Take Order Popcorn Distribution
Thursday, Dec, 4 -- Deposits due to Bank of America
Friday, Dec 5 -- Take Order settlement due to council
Fri-Sat, Jan 9-10, 2009 -- $1,500 Popcorn Club Party

For information on your distribution site and who to contact, please visit the council's popcorn webpage.

New incentives were a hit!
We received more than 200 completed order forms that were entered in the council's weekly "Fill It Up" drawing and 3 Scouts won electric scooters!! Nearly 300 forms have been entered to win the Grand Prize: a trip to Disneyland for a family of four! The drawing will take place in December. Congratulations to all of our winners!

Two units sold over $15,000 during Take Order and will be awarded with home delivery of their product. Congratulations to Pack 586 in the Alpine District at $18,720, and Pack 546 in Sammamish Trails at $18,120 in Take Order sales.

Another great popcorn kickoff!

Norman Rockwell and Joseph Csatari Art Visits Seattle

(L-R): Phil Smart, Sr.; Shafer Smart; Phil Smart, Jr.

On October 9th, the National Art Tour made its way to the Chief Seattle Council at the Broadmoor Golf and Country Club. Over 150 guests were in attendance. In addition, volunteers from the Mount Baker Council, Cascade Pacific Council, Pacific Harbors Council, Grand Columbia Council, Inland Northwest Council, and Alamo Area Council traveled to Seattle to view the art as well.

The highlight of the evening was a special program led by master of ceremonies, Wayne Perry, which recognized Scouters who had recently made significant donations to the Chief Seattle Council. In addition, Jim Terry, Assistant Chief Scout Executive, presented a special Norman Rockwell print as a token of appreciation for the Chief Seattle Council's hosting of the event, which is presently displayed in the lobby of the Scout Office. Many thanks to Wright Dickinson, who served as chairman for the event, and his committee of Chris Dickinson, Brian Harron, Mike McNellis MD., Tom Pigott, and Ken Tousley.

A Message From Council Commissioner Kevin Baker
Commissioner service plays a significant role in helping units and unit leaders succeed. Do you know your Unit Commissioner? Have you been to Roundtable & met your Roundtable Commissioner? November is re-charter month. And your Unit Commissioners are an important part of that process and there to help. Are you a Centennial Quality Unit? It's probably achievable. Review the form you completed last year and see where you stand. Being a Centennial Quality Unit says quite simply...You are doing your best to improve and increase adult leader training. Improve youth recruitment and retention. Improve parent participation. Improve youth advancement. Improve outdoor program participation. Improve annual program planning. Have you met YOUR goals for 2008? I hope so! Celebrate your accomplishment. And look to 2009 for ways to improve the QUALITY of program in your unit. Remember...It's all about "Delivering the Promise".

Policy on Scout Participation in Political Events
With the presidential election coming up this fall, it is a good time to re-state the BSA’s long-standing policy regarding the participation of Scouts in political rallies and other political events.

Uniformed unit members and leaders may participate in flag ceremonies at political events and may lead the Pledge of Allegiance; however, they should retire after the ceremony and not remain on the speakers’ platform or in a conspicuous location where television viewers could construe their presence as an endorsement or symbol of support. In addition, photos of candidates or Scouts in uniform or BSA marks and logos are not allowed in political campaign materials of any kind.

Scouts in uniform should not distribute materials or literature on behalf of a candidate or issue.

Volunteers and professionals must be alert to situations that would imply that the BSA favors one candidate over another. Strict observance of our long-standing policy against the active participation of uniformed Scouts and leaders in political events is mandatory.

The key wording in this is “uniformed”. This is not designed to discourage a Scout or leader from personally becoming politically active and learning about being a good citizen, but, rather to prevent the implied endorsement by Scouting of a candidate or issue. A unit should not make participation in any political event mandatory for all Scouts. We must respect the different beliefs and passions of each individual Scout and his family.

If you have any questions, please contact the council office at 206-725-5200.

WashJam 2009
Don’t Miss the Scouting Event of the Year!
For only the second time in Washington State History, the Boy Scouts of America will host an all-state Jamboree: WashJam 2009. Co-sponsored by the Chief Seattle Council and Pacific Harbors Council, WashJam will attract youth and leaders from all over the Puget Sound region. Each will assemble at Fort Lewis Army Base, just south of Tacoma, Washington on August 20-23, 2009, for the most exciting Scouting event of the year. Entertaining activities and unforgettable shows will attract thousands of Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Venturers.

"This is a great opportunity for our young people to try new activities and gives the youth a chance to form relationships with Scouts from other packs and troops across council boundaries," said Rick Cordray, the WashJam chairman. "It is a way for youth to experience a unique Jamboree setting while keeping travel expenses low."

Scouts and Leaders will set up camp on the grounds of Fort Lewis and cooking will be done by patrols in traditional jamboree style. Nearly 4,000 attended the first event of this kind in 2004 and we anticipate even more participants this time around. The WashJam 2009 theme, "Celebrate the Adventure," coincides with the theme of the BSA centennial, and this event will kickoff more than a year of special events celebrating this historical milestone. WashJam memorabilia will be available to enhance Scouts and Scouters collections.

The event is being led by overall chairman Rick Cordray, and Brian Harron heads the contingent of adult volunteers representing the Chief Seattle Council.

For registration, sponsorship, or other information visit the WashJam website – www.washjam.org.

1st Annual Foothills District Nite Hike a Success

On September 12th and 13th, over 200 Scouts and Scouters met at Pack Forest for the 1st Annual Nite Hike. Much like a camporee, the Nite Hike featured team building and Scout skills stations hosted by Troops, Venturing Crews, and Girl Scouts. The event started at sunset on Friday night with Scouts hiking to the stations along a five mile loop. Everyone had fun with the 'Indiana Jones: Life Scout' theme and came up with some great events. Favorites included the "Scout Law Pillars" that you had to step on in order or have "boulders" come rolling down at you, the Girl Scouts featured Geo-cashing with Girl Scout Cookies as the treasure, and another favorite was the blow dart range.

A photographer from Boy Life magazine was on hand to document the event. Look for a potential feature article in the next year.

We'll be back for the 2nd annual Nite Hike in the Fall of 2009. Keep an eye out for details.

The National BSA Endowment Recognition Awards
Encouraging gifts to BSA local council endowment funds is one of Scouting's highest priorities. It is one of the best ways to ensure that your council can continue to offer the outstanding programs it now has and also grow to meet the needs of the youth and communities it serves. In its gratitude for such support, the BSA nationally offers three distinct endowment recognition awards. Those programs are:

The James E. West Fellowship Program
James E. West was the first Chief Scout Executive of the Boy Scouts of America, and he served in that position for more than three decades. Many individuals and corporations make these gifts either on behalf of someone else – such as in honor of an Eagle Scout, Silver Beaver recipient, a retirement, a special accomplishment, or anniversary – or in memory of a special individual.

The 1910 Society
Founded in 1910, the Boy Scouts of America has grown into something larger and more significant than anyone anticipated. We honor that special date by presenting the 1910 Society award to donors who make gifts of $25,000 or more to their council endowments. These gifts can be in the form of cash, securities, land, five-year pledges, or other property suitable for a council endowment fund or easily converted to cash.

The Founder's Circle
The newest level of endowment recognition, the Founder's Circle, is intended to recognize deferred gifts designated for council endowment funds. With deferred giving (also called planned giving) so widely and effectively used by so many donors, the BSA wants to recognize the importance of such major gifts.

The early founders of the BSA had the vision and commitment to make Scouting the number open youth organization in the world. In that spirit, we honor the modern-day visionaries who qualify for the Founder's Circle in their commitment to perpetuate the visions and beliefs of those founders.

If you would like to find out more about our gift recognition programs or about Scouting's endowment campaign, contact your local council at: 206-902-2321.

Troop 835's mobile kitchen needs your help
Yesterday we got word that a women’s shelter and treatment facility was out of food. So this morning we gave half of our emergency food to them. It is enough to feed them and their children for 1 week. In fact my church's food bank is empty too. These are tough times.

Now, we need you help. Please consider helping us to restock our emergency kitchen with food. Please seek donations of cash or institutional size non-perishable food to help. If there is a storm or earthquake in the next month we will be caught 'unprepared'. That is not the Scout Motto!

Donations can be sent to: Scout Troop 835, PO Box 77, Pacific, WA 98047 or call Scoutmaster Jim Brass at 206-227-5977 to arrange a time to drop off food.

We are also desperately seeking a large trailer to haul 5,000 bottles of water and other supplies.

Thank you so much for your help.
