Venturing

Venturing is a program for young men and young women ages 14 through 20. The purpose of Venturing is to provide experiences to help young people mature and become responsible and caring adults. Young people in Venturing learn leadership skills and participate in challenging outdoor activities that help develop self-confidence.

In the Chief Seattle Council, Venturers may look forward to Venturing Camping opportunities and other District Activities. Venturing focuses resources that help a community organization provide wholesome, flexible, well-rounded, challenging activities, tailor-made for teenage youth

Kodiak

The Kodiak course combines the elements of leadership and service to others as the two key tenants of Venturing. Servant leadership is a philosophy that teaches the leader to work with and through a team to accomplish the mission.

Kodiak's methods are the following: Challenging outdoor treks to use nature as a classroom (no indoor sessions). Five leadership skills, called "commissions," are taught. They can be offered over a week, or over two weekends. It uses a hands-on teaching approach with very short presentations. Click here for training details and here for events and updates.

Kodiak X
Kodiak X is a leadership challenge course that builds on the skills gained at a Venturing Leadership Skills Course (VLSC) and the leadership commissions learned at a Kodiak. Completion of a Kodiak is a prerequisite to attend a Kodiak X. Kodiak X is the third in the Venturing Nature of Leadership series and participants will review what they learned at Kodiak, and gain two additional Commissions. Download the application here.

To supplement the service provided by each Scout district, the council has organized the Skippers and Mates Committee. The committee provides monthly training for it’s adult leadership, in addition to providing 3 council events; The Fall Rendezvous, The Mert Wells Regatta, and A Bridge and Ball.

Special thanks to Admiral Horton Smith who currently serves as Commodore for Skippers and Mates. For more information contact your District Executive or Doug Mitschke at (206) 725-5200 or click here for general (National site) Sea Scout information.

Powder Horn

The Powder Horn course is designed to introduce and expose Venturing and Boy Scouting adult unit leaders to the activities and resources necessary to operate a successful outdoor/high adventure unit-level program. It is based on the eight core and eighteen electives found in the Venturing Ranger program. It is intended to help adult leaders get out of the box in finding and using resources and in the way they lead their unit-level high adventure programs. No high adventure skills are taught in this course. It is designed to have some disciplines introduced with a hands-on segment. Example: For scuba if a pool is available, it is suggested to do a Discover Scuba (PADI) session where participants get into a shallow pool and wear scuba gear. It is not scuba certification. Participants will not learn how to rock climb or shoot a skeet course, but will learn where to go to find those who can teach these skills to Boy Scouts and Venturers. Click here for more information.

Purpose

The course is designed to help unit-level adult leaders to:

  1. Find the resources necessary for a high adventure program.
  2. Understand what is involved in different high adventure disciplines.
  3. Run a high adventure program safely.

Learning Objectives

  1. Learn what resources are available to support a high adventure program.
  2. Learn where to find the resources.
  3. Learn how to use the resources.
  4. Learn how to safely do a high adventure program.
  5. Learn what is involved with different high adventure disciplines.
